Cheyenne Autumn (1964) Video Trailer
Cheyenne Autumn (1964) IMDb , billed as John Ford’s final Western masterpiece, is a film that pricks the conscience of North Americans about “the Indian problem”. Richard Widmark plays the conflicted Captain Archer in charge of retrieving the “delinquent” Cheyenne band who has escaped their deathtrap Indian reservation in the desert. Carroll Baker plays his love interest, a Quaker woman
caught between the native culture and the whites. While Sal Mineo, Ricardo Montalban and Dolores Del Rio might not be entirely convincing as Cheyenne tribes people, they get the job done in portraying the plight of the native Americans in a sympathetic light.

Days of Wine and Roses(1962) Video Trailers
“Days of Wine and Roses” (1962)
IMDb looks inside the private world of an alcololic as Jack Lemmon plays the part of Joe
Clay. Lemmon convincingly portrays the struggles of the charming
and talented addict who quickly draws his young wife (played by Lee Remick)
into the predictable downward spiral with him. Although some might be tempted
to write the film off as a mere modern-day morality tale, I tend to see it as a
laudable attempt to deal honestly with the subject of alcoholism. The flavour is definitely
bittersweet. It’s a film that points toward the intensely human capacity for courage,
hope and redemption as well as for degradation.
This film was paired with “Clean and Sober” (1988) IMDb with Michael Keaton, another very powerful film about addiction. See the Saturday Night at the Movies preview for both films in the “Hooked” episode here.

Elmer Gantry (1960) and The Swimmer (1968) Video Trailer
Burt Lancaster does some very interesting work in both "Elmer Gantry" (1960) INDb and "The Swimmer" (1968) INDb. Both films prove to be revelatory in both the figurative and the literal sense:) These screen adaptations of literary vehicles might leave you slightly off balance, but still glued to the screen.

Fahrenheit 451 (1966)
"Fahrenheit 451" (1966) IMDb, inspired by Ray Bradbury's science fiction novel of the same name, delivers a disturbing vision of a futuristic world where books are contraband to be burned by the state. For those of us who love books, this is a truly scary and undesirable future reality. Werner Oskar stars
as the fireman who begins to question the purpose behind burning books in the oppressive police state. Julie Christie plays the double role of the witless wife of the fireman, Linda, and the open minded free spirit, Clarisse.
